The entries for the 132nd running of the Velka Pardubicka with Slavia Insurance were announced on Thursday, September 22nd. Seventeen names, including some from abroad, are on the list. Last year’s winner, Talent, is entered, but the name of 2019 winner Theophilos is missing due to an injury.
After the publication of the entries and a week before declarations to run, the 132nd running of the Velka Pardubicka with Slavia Insurance has begun to take a clearer shape. Fourteen of the 22 horses that qualified for the race via the qualification races at Pardubice racecourse have been entered. The other three are from Ireland and from Scuderia Aichner.
Trainer Stanislav Popelka has the largest number of entries. He wants to send out for 132nd running of the race Imphal, winner of the last of the qualication races, as well as Lombargini and also 12-y-o Stretton, the second-oldest horse in the field. Josef Váňa senior and junior are sending a total of four horses. Josef senior wants to win again with 2017 winner, 13-y-o No Time To Lose, the oldest horse in the field, and Dusigrosz, a newcomer to the Velka Pardubicka. Josef junior trains both of the horses owned by Scuderia Aichner, whose horses run mainly in Italy. The Aichner-owned horses are Brunch Royal and 7-y-o Santa Klara, the only mare on the list of entries.
Irish trainer Denis Hogan has entered Young Dev to run in our toughest and oldest steeplechase. This 8-y-o grey won a shorter race over hurdles at Punchestown, but he showed that he can stay by finishing a race over almost 6900 metres at Uttoxeter.
The two horses from Slovakia are trained by Jaroslav Brečka, who by the way rode the winner of the Velka Pardubicka 30 years ago. Kaiserwalzer and Star will both feel at home when running at Pardubice again.
The declarations to run and the ceremonial draw for starting numbers will take place on Friday, September 30th, 2022, in Prague.
Night Moon, trained by Pavel Tůma, is entered for the Labe Stakes. Dr. Charvát’s 6-year-old was unbeaten over fences until his fall in the last of the qualification races for this year’s Velka Pardubicka. Two of the horses entered for the Vltava Stakes had fulfilled the criteria for running in the 132nd running of the Velka Pardubicka with Slavia Insurance. However, their trainers chose a different race for them. The horses are Aeneas, trained by Josef Váňa senior, and Paris Eiffel, trained in Slovakia by Ján Cagáň. Paris Eiffel ran in last year’s Velka Pardubicka. Lodgian Whistle’s entry to make a comeback in the Popler Memorial – the short-distance crosscountry race – will be followed with interest.
