Thirty years after the famous victory of It’s a Snip, another foreign representative has finally triumphed. The winner of the 135th Velká pardubická with Slavia pojišťovna was the 8-year-old gelding Stumptown, ridden by jockey Keith Michael Donoghue. The bay horse had a string of excellent results behind him, having succeeded in major races in Punchestown and Cheltenham. He competed in Pardubice after a long break due to injury.
He wasn’t very visible in the race itself, jumping at the back of the field. At the start, last year’s winner Sexy Lord and jockey Myška performed as expected, leading the field of horses to the Taxis ditch. There was only one collision here, on the landing after the Taxis ditch. There was contact between the geldings Stormmy with jockey Martin Liška and Klarc Kent with jockey Ondřej Velek. There were no injuries, but the race was over for them.
In addition to Sexy Lord in front, Cuwall (jockey Jakub Kocman) also performed well, as did, also surprisingly, High In The Sky (jockey Jan Faltejsek). Dumon Roclay made a jumping error at the Small English Jump, and his jockey Marcel Novák fell to the ground. Sexy Lord led the horses onto the grassy oval, and High In The Sky improved his position, riding the dark bay intensively and pulling away from his rivals. Nevertheless, someone was faster. Stumptown (jockey Keith Michael Donoghue) sprinted past him on the home stretch. From the back of the field, Čáryjape (jockey Adam Čmiel) made a great finish to close in on the leaders, truly working his magic to take third place. Cuwall finished fourth and Zarate (jockey James Best) fifth. The next two places went to Gentleman De Reve, newly registered under an American stable (Teddy Davies), and the last place went to Dulcar De Sivola (jockey Lukáš Matuský).
“It’s great, I’m exited to have won. The obstacles were difficult and it wasn’t even planned to be so far behind, but Stumptown handled it well. I’m really excited,” said the winning jockey shortly after the race.
Defending champion Sexy Lord was stopped by his rider, jockey Jaroslav Myška, almost at the very end of the race. Eleven horses crossed the finish line. There were no serious injuries to horses during the entire race program.
